The Urban Scholars Program

About Us

About Us

We at Urban Scholars are a dedicated, ambitious bunch who has chosen to make education a priority in our lives. And we–students, alumni, educators and funders–take great pride in our accomplishments.

What began as a pilot program in 1983 with only 15 students has grown to a year-round, after-school, academic enrichment program, and intensive seven-week summer program serving approximately 75 high school and 30 middle school students.

Even more importantly, most students who finish the program are accepted by at least three colleges or universities, and nearly 100% of this same group will go on to study at a four year college. Not surprisingly, more than 86% of these students complete their undergraduate educations.

We are able to do all of this, thanks to the partnerships the program has with the Nellie Mae Education Foundation, State Street Bank, Verizon, John Hancock, The Philanthropic Initiative on behalf of an anonymous donor, New England Financial. Gillette, TJX Corporation. The program also receives support from the University of Massachusetts Boston and the Massachusetts Educational Opportunity Program.

Meet our Urban Scholars students and alumni on our special 25th anniversary site.
